It is simply on the become so it starts to falter, but the smack-upwards finale rescues they in the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and intelligently dialogued, it’ll have no high difficulty in the way of living off their extremely unsightly term.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Flick Bulletin told you “The movie movements during the a simple rate, the new conversation is advanced and you may characterisations basically energetic. The new film’s creator and you can manager, Robert Rossen, sets up a good multidimensional chess game, getting mortal limits, between Johnny, his company (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may an effective scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose brother (Nina Foch) did at local casino and old good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic software, the new cast’s suavely managed body gestures out-of like and you can hazard, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may stylishly cocky images (and their political conscience) get this pugnacious yet detail by detail spectacle a low profile vintage of the category.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, as an authorities inspector, and additionally up the rating . Although the patch employs a familiar development, the characterizations was fresh and the activities sufficient to help you overbalance. Dialog was terse and topical, steering clear of the psychological, phoney reach. Strange digital camera angles show up occasionally to help you heighten appeal and momentarily arrest the attention. Good teamplay by the Robert Rossen, increasing as director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, new copywriter and member producer, including aids in rendering it a smooth creation.” [ 11 ]

Its primarily a matter of watching Mr. Powell undergo his paces smartly if you’re an enormous throw out of stars and you may performers give your classic help. Evelyn Keyes performs the favorable absolutely nothing lady just who brings about this new finest in him and you will Ellen Drew ‘s the easy and you can slinky vixen whom will get your on jams. Thomas Gomez is actually fatty just like the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb does a special in a position trip while the an exhausted police inspector just who ultimately shuts the situation. Many ingesting and you may smoking is completed of the the worried.” [ several ]
